Critique Notes for January 20th: Lori Gilbert

Discussion on the drawings and the idea of doing a catalog of her accumulated drawings titled “Why I’m Giving Up”

Ideas:
-The stopping point in the process.
-Wanting to have some conclusions about ones own work before disseminating it to the world.
-Making art in the 3rd person.

Comments:
“air is overrated. – nice!”
“Well, actually Killer Whale is a breed of Dolphin”
“It seems like you’re into pr”
“for this project, use earnesty.”
“The book reasserts a drama, I give up!”
I think its interesting to “give up” in the context of your self help pamphlets.

Questions:
Is it a working method you want to give up or art all together
Do you feel like you have reached the end of something?
Is the importance of this catalog project, the distribution?
Are you faking?
Can you make yourself/your making a ritual?
Can you make this more specific? Pinpoint one change you want to make?
Are you critiquing the institution of art? the typical structures for art’s distribution/consumption?

Suggestions:
Look up:
Edward Bernays
Bob and Roberta Smith
People who ‘gave up’ in one way or another
–Tehching Hsieh, Duchamp, Linda Montano, Tom Friedman, Baldessari’s burn
use the format of a scripted powerpoint to organize your work/ideas
you should just cook all day then!
